Orangutans

Orangutans come from the forests of Borneo and Sumatra. They are large apes with long arms and bodies covered with reddish hair. Orangutans can live up to sixty years in captivity.

Orangutans have opposable thumbs. They use tools such as sticks to trap insects or find ropes and vines to make swings and hammocks.

They also turn leaves into cups for water and make umbrellas by holding big leaves over their heads when it rains. When insects buzz around their heads, they swat them with leafy fly swatters.

Bonnie, an orangutan at the National Zoo, imitates her keepers. She sweeps her enclosure and cleans the windows (with dirty rags). She’s even learned to whistle just by watching them! Everyone agrees that orangutans are really smart animals. Habitat loss and poaching have put them in grave danger.
